Trauma and Resilience

The Coalition helps to strengthen disaster mental health training, planning, and community response in our community.

Following white supremacist violence in Charlotttesville in 2017, the Coalition  coordinated evidence-based disaster mental health training  in Psychological First Aid and Skills for Psychological Recovery. Based on this experience, we developed a disaster mental health plan for organizations across our region, and have helped to respond to a number of community needs.

We are currently working with UVA to provide free Wisdom and Wellbeing Peer Support Training (WWPST) and Stress First Aid training to local healthcare and behavioral health organizations to strengthen resilience and reduce occupational stress injuries during these challenging times. Our framework for these response efforts, as well as for COVID-19 and occupational stress reduction workcenters on the five core needs in times of stress:

  • Safety
  • Calm
  • Connection
  • Competence
  • Confidence.
