Motivational Interviewing with People Who Use Drugs – Opioid Stakeholder Group Training

Join the Community Mental Health and Wellness Coalition and the National Harm Reduction Coalition for a training on Motivational Interviewing with People Who Use Drugs / Engagement Strategies.

Participants will be introduced to the basic principles of Motivational Interviewing with emphasis on how the “spirit” of MI parallels the principles of harm reduction. Participants will also learn the core skills of OARS and the fundamental processes that drive and sustain engagement. This course will also provide an opportunity for participants to walk through the “best practices” of engagement, developed by both people with lived experience and providers, including what to do, what not to do, and general tips when working with individuals who may have complex needs.

Training Objectives:

• Describe the core principles of Motivational Interviewing
• Discuss how harm reduction and the “spirit” of MI intersect
• Identify at least three strategies to promote engagement with individuals presenting with complex needs
• Reflect on how they (training participants) currently engage in “best practices”, and assess what barriers should/can be addressed to enhance their work
